Dive #4 Atu – Close

The Basics

Atu is a 21-year-old producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. While listening to his songs you hear a clear 90’s r&b influence mixed with his signature futuristic sound. This results in a fusion of bass and soul among exquisite vocal sampling. I find listening to his music highly addictive, Atu is a true inspiration for me. ‘Close’ is one of the ten tracks of the ‘Pictures on Silence’ LP. All proceeds made of this LP will go to EveryChild in hopes of providing some financial assistance based in rural areas of Malawi.

The Beat

The songs opens with the piano and not long after that we get to hear the wonderful vocals. His vocal-sampling game is on point, he used the vocals from Omarion – Speedin and Aaliyah – Rock The Boat. They act like glue to merge the instruments and the drums. The shaker is most important sound for the shaping of the flow the beat has. It didn’t require a lot of different sounds to create this masterpiece, however the perfect selection of sounds and a flawless balance between them was crucial to build this astonishing beat. You know what they say… Quality over quantity.

My Score

I can’t stress enough how much I like this track. It’s like the producer squeezed all these different feelings inside this song. It’s like he really wanted to get Closer to someone, for that reason I reward it with a deserved score of 9/10.

Dive #3 G-Eazy – Marilyn ft. Dominique LeJeune (Christoph Andersson Remix)

The Basics

This is a remix by Christoph Andersson, who’s been working together with G-Eazy for a long time now. The track can be found on the LP ‘Must Be Twice’, this is an extra album with five remixes from Christoph Andersson. All the remixes are made out of songs from G-Eazy’s album ‘Must Be Nice’.

The Beat

The remix has a very different vibe than the original. Starting off with the instruments, in the original song they used a guitar and a piano that are standing out, together with drums that are in your face. Contrary to the subtle sounds and drums we hear in the remix.

The original song by G-Eazy:

Christoph made sure that vocal of Dominique LeJeune (who sings the chorus in the original) was standing out. He pitched it a litte bit up and put some effects on her voice, like reverb and delay to imitate a big room she’s singing in. I think the result is beautiful, it’s like we can hear her sing in a big arena. The sample almost continuously plays during the song, sometimes he chops it up and uses different patterns of the vocal to variate between different parts in his remix.

My Score

I like this song a lot because it creates a strong impact, even though its chill and smooth. That’s why I give this song 7/10.

Dive #2 B.o.B – Cranberry Moonwalk

The basics

‘Cranberry Moonwalk’ is a track off B.o.B’s album ‘Underground Luxury. B.o.B teamed up with FKI and Big Zar for the production of the beat. On the chorus we hear Mike Fresh. It’s one of the most liked records on the album, in my opinion it’s the most original one.

The feeling

While listening to the song I can’t help thinking about the computergame ‘Rayman’ I played when I was a kid. The athmosphere of the song is like walking in the world ‘Band Land’ of the game.

The hook has a chill vibe, it gives me a feeling of driving around with the sun out. And also flying through the clouds. Check the image below, you’ll get what I’m saying.

carrrr

The beat

The song starts with soft, clean, delayed plucks on the guitar. This guitar returns in every hook with Mike Fresh singing along, a transition effect is getting higher and louder nearby the end of the hook. In the second, third and last hook we hear other instruments too, a synth that plays the chords and a piano that plays the same notes as the guitar. After the hook the beats changes completely. With a pluck gliding from high to low notes and hard knocking 808 drums that also has some slide notes. Every beginning of a bar we hear a female chant on the background, they added some delay and reverb effects to the chant. In the second half of the verse two new instruments come in, a lead and an organ. The verse is very rythmic and B.o.B raps along fluently in the perfect style.

My score

Because of the originality of the beat and the feeling I get from Cranberry Moonwalk I give it 8 out of 10 stars.
Though I still have no idea what’s the meaning of a ‘Cranberry Moonwalk’…

Cheers.

Dive #1 PARTYNEXTDOOR – Recognize (ft. Drake)

party 2

The Basics

Recognize is the third single of off Party’s studio album ‘PartyNextDoor Two’. The previous two being “Muse” and “Her Way”. The album was released on July 29, 2014. He’s currently singed under Drake’s record label ‘OVO Sound’. The two Canadian singer/rappers collaborated on this single which makes it the fifth time Party and Drizzy did a song together and it’s definitely the best one yet. Party himself produced this 5 minute long record which sets the tone for the album.

The feeling

This is a dark, mysterious, raw song with some great bars layed on top off it by Party and Drake. The theme I see with this song is a dark environment. For example a dark club, dark streets. The creators of the video had the same thoughts…

The Lyrics

The song is about how Party “recognizes” that both he and a female have options when it comes to who they go home with on a given night. However, Party just wants her tonight. The same counts for the female, but Party doesn’t care about the other men, the only one who matters is her. He’s at the club trying to leave with that one girl.

Notable lyrics:

Drake:
“I gotta get you those snow tires for your Mercedes, I’m glad you reminded me baby
All of these things slip my mind it’s been crazy”

He says this because you never know when you’ll have to drive in the snow.

drake snow

In the second line Drizzy says his life is busy as hell, he can’t be expected to remember everything!
Note how “slip” refers back to the snow tires in the previous line: snow tires prevent slippage on roads in wintry weather.

The Beat

The song starts with a some synth notes that are a little bit detuned. After a short intro Party starts singing and the raw percussion, brass hits and claps come in, to let us know something big is ahead. The percussion gets more intense with hard knocking stabs. After that short build-up the percussion goes away and we can only hear Party, the bassline filtered percussion and claps (if you listen carefully), this is the “chill part”. The song explodes from being quiet and chill to very agressive with all the drums and instruments playing. In the hook we can hear distorted guitars striking on the background, they give a boost to Party’s singing.

Party sampled the classic reggae track titled “Request the Style” by Top Cat, check the sample here, from 0:05 to 0:13:

Ofcourse Party added some effects and did some cuts in it, in Recognize you hear it on 1:57.

The beat constantly switches from being very chill to very agressive which makes the words stronger and stand out more. On 2:40 Party starts rapping in a very rythmic way, this makes the song even more special than it already was. Another hook and then it’s time for Drake to walk in. Drizzy starts of with singing when the beat is quiet and chill but when the drums come in he starts rapping. Drake brings his finest bars (a la “0 To 100”) with him and when he’s done Party ends the song with another hook.

My score

I give ‘Recognize’ 8 out of 10. This is still one of my favorite songs at the moment. I’m looking forward to Party’s next project, in the meanwhile I’ll listen some more PARTYNEXTDOOR 1 and 2.

Introduction

Dear readers,
before we dive deeper into songs please give me a few minutes to introduce myself to all of you…

My name is Floris Van Acker, I’m a 20 years old boy who lives in Belgium. I study business management in Ghent and my biggest hobby is producing music.
The reason why I’m writing this blog is because music is my passion. I love listening to music, thinking about music, producing music, playing musical instruments, talking about music, criticising music, … Basically everything that has something to do with music.

Why am I so obsessed with music you ask me?
To be honest, I don’t really know the exact answer. What I can tell you is that it all started when I was a little kid. I easily became addicted to several songs even though I didn’t know the name of the song or the artist. I remember going on holiday with my family andhearing my favorite songs in the car on the radio. For my birthday my parents gave me a CD that I really wanted, it was Eminem’s ‘The Eminem Show’. I loved this CD and played it back a hundred times. A couple years later I started listening to music on the computer, so I didn’t have to wait till I heared them on the TV or on the Radio.

The Eminem Show

To give you some examples of artists and songs I admired back in the day:

  • Coolio – Gangsta’s Paradise
  • The Notorious BIG – Juicy
  • Gigi D’Agostino – L’Amour Toujours
  • ATC – All Around The World
  • Eminem – Stan ft. Dido
  • Justin Timberlake – Cry Me A River
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers – Snow
  • Sum 41- Over My head
  • Green Day – Basket Case
  • The Game – My Life ft. Lil Wayne
  • Kanye West – Heartless
  • T.I. – Live Your Life ft. Rihanna
  • Kid Ink – Take Over The World ft. Ty$
  • Travis Porter – Ride Like That ft. Jeremih
  • PARTYNEXTDOOR – Recognize ft. Drake

For my 13th birthday my parants gave me an electric guitar. From this point the passion to make music starts. Some years later I started experimenting with Fruity Loops (a program that makes it possible to produce music) and the rest is history. Today, another 5 years later I produce beats almost every day and listen to music all day.
I listen to a lot of Rnb/Hip Hop music, because it’s my favorite musicgenre. I love nice melodies combined with a good beat. I Also listen to other genres, as long as I feel the song.

And that is why I’m writing this blog, I’m going to give an in-depth review of certain songs where I explain my feelings and opinions.
In other words… I’m going to dive deeper into songs.

See you at dive #1!
